The Best Organic Hemp Protein Powder

For those looking for a healthy dairy and soy free natural protein powder, hemp is an excellent choice and alternative. But how do you choose the best organic hemp protein powder?

We decided to take a look at the various qualities of what we are looking for to decide which one would work the best and our current favorite is Navitas Naturals Organic Hemp Seed Protein Powder.

There are many different health benefits of hemp protein powder. Being a plant that has been cultivated for thousands of years, it is one that has withstood the test of time in being useful and beneficial to your health. They are an excellent plant source of Omega 3 Fatty acids, high in fiber, high in antioxidants, and also a good source of protein, Vitamin A, zinc, magnesium, potassium, and iron.

Buying all natural and organic products is essential for better health. Most commercial products are filled with pesticides, chemicals, and even heavy metals. Hemp is a great all natural alternative that does not require processing. When you think about the processing necessary to turn liquid milk into protein powder and the damage that is done to those proteins, most of those commercially prepared chalky powders don’t quite seem so appealing or even good for you at all!

Another important factor to consider is the consistency of the product. Many of the powders we have seen and tried are gritty and too coarse to blend into smoothies without it being obvious or to hard to drink. Some may say that hemp seed protein powder is a bit of an acquired taste to get used to, but with the ones that are finely ground, and if you start off small and work your way up, you can find that it is not even noticeable and blends in great with almost any recipe. It’s not uncommon in addition to mixing it in with smoothies and juices that you could also add it to baked goods, oatmeal, and many other of your favorite recipes.

The other thing we decided to consider when choosing one was the best price and value for the money. There are some available that are very cheap and inexpensive – but when it is cheap but tastes horrible or is too gritty to blend in with your drinks, it only is a waste of money. We decided that a price of around $15-$20 is pretty affordable for just about anyone, especially when you consider the many benefits available and how many servings that provides!

So, now you know – our favorite best organic protein powder still remains to be Navitas Naturals Organic Hemp Seed Protein Powder.

But don’t take our word for it – why not try it and let us know how you like it?

The Health Benefits of Smoothies

Making your own weight loss shakes rather than using powders is very good for you – and so for that reason we decided to share some of the amazing health benefits of smoothies.

First, what is a smoothie? Generally it is a thick drink prepared in a blender that is made with fresh fruits and vegetables, though it can include other ingredients as well. They are generally sweet in nature, which makes them both delicious and gratifying to enjoy.

Smoothies are one of the few things in life that naturally tastes great – and is actually quite healthy for you!

Here are some of the main smoothie health benefits:

Antioxidants: Antioxidants are crucial to maintaining good health, especially when many foods that are typical of today’s modern diet are deficient in antioxidants. Our bodies have cells which are often referred to as free radicals which can cause a number of health problems and conditions. Antioxidants help get rid of these free radicals, and are like the police in your body. Cooking fruits and vegetables often destroys antioxidants, but when you eat raw foods prepared in a blender, most of the antioxidants remain intact.

Digestive Enzymes: The key to living healthier and losing weight is good digestion. When you cook foods or use processed foods such as skim milk, the digestive enzymes and properties that facilitate in good digestion are lost, causing often bloating or stomach pain and weight gain. Better digestion = better health, and so when you eat raw foods they come packed with the necessary enzymes to ensure that you can digest them properly.

Liquefied: Imagine biting, chewing, and eating something into teeny tiny pieces – it can be very hard to do! The bigger pieces of food you swallow, the more work your digestive tract has to do in order to process it for vitamins and minerals – and this can cause issues for weight loss.

Vitamins & Minerals: There is no need for vitamin supplements when you get the proper amount of fruits and vegetables each day. A serving of spinach in a green smoothie for example may offer you actually more calcium than a glass of milk. Green leafy veggies are also high in Vitamin K which promotes healthy bones. While it will depend on which foods you use and enjoy, you can be certain that you will get many of the vitamins and minerals you need without needing supplements!

Get Sick Less: You won’t be worrying about things like colds or the flu very often, because when your body is getting the nutrition it needs, all of your cells will be healthy. Getting a cold or virus may be annoying, but it can actually be quite good for you, as it is the way the body gets rid of the old and weak cells that are holding you back. It’s not uncommon to get a cold when you first start the new diet – but after that, you’ll probably not be sick again anytime soon!

It’s Convenient: Let’s face it, us as humans don’t like to do anything that’s difficult or hard to do. There is nothing easier that popping a few ingredients in a blender, mixing it for a couple of minutes, and then pouring it into a cup to enjoy. Best of all, it’s portable, so you can take it with you anywhere, such as work, school, or other places. When it’s fun and easy to be healthier, you’re much more likely to stay motivated! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and so a good portable drink is an easy way to make sure you start the day off right!

Fiber: Fiber is very good for you, and it helps again in aiding with digestion. When your digestive tract is working at its peak, it’s easier for you to lose weight. Most diet professionals recommend a high fiber diet in order to lose weight, and drinking up your fruits and veggies is an easy way to get that daily fiber intake naturally.

Slow Sugar Release: Many people worry about the sugar content of these types of drinks, as well as wondering if fruit smoothies are fattening. As long as you do not add sugar to your drink, you can be confident that the sugar will be absorbed to the blood stream more evenly, avoiding the never ending cycle of sugar highs and lows. The fiber and digestive enzymes in the fruits help keep your glucose levels even.

Satisfying: If you make smoothies with the right ingredients, they can be very satisfying and help you stop constant hunger cravings. Instead of being hungry all the time, putting you at risk for over eating, you can be completely satisfied instead and able to wait until it is time for the next meal.

All Natural: When you enjoy foods that are made from all natural and organic ingredients, you are doing your body a huge favor as it will reduce your exposure to toxic elements, which can also promote good health. .

All in all, making your own smoothie shakes is a fun and enjoyable experience. Even better, there are so many health benefits of smoothies that you can enjoy them guilt free to help you lose weight.

Are Fruit Smoothies Fattening?

Many people ask us these questions all the time: Are Fruit Smoothies Fattening? Don’t they have a lot of sugar? Won’t they actually add more calories to your diet? Will they make me fat?

While there is certainly a lot of confusion and different opinions about this, we can tell you that most people, who make their own smoothies, with real, whole ingredients (not using protein powders or weight loss shake mixes) – almost always lose weight. When you have the right plan and program and know how to use a fruit smoothie to curb hunger cravings and get the fat burning nutrition your body needs, you will lose weight!

The truth of the matter is that everything you’ve always been told about fat is…well, a big fat lie! (Sorry, couldn’t resist the pun there!)

There is a BIG difference between eating fats in food and the “fat” that we associate with being overweight.  You see, our bodies need fat. Our brains depend on it, and we convert fat into energy. When our bodies get the good fats, it goes to pure energy, – but with the wrong fats it can cause us to instead burn sugars for energy, which causes a vicious cycle. So many people make the mistake of thinking that all fat is bad for us – when really it is a recipe for disaster!

What are good fats? Good fats are natural, unprocessed fats. For example, butter is a healthy fat. It is much more healthier than margarine, which is basically just some rancid soybean oil that’s been artificially and chemically flavored and colored. Your body can digest butter very easily (even if you are lactose intolerant!) – margarine not so much.We also need fats that are known as Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids. This is the kind of fat you find naturally in most fruits and vegetables, grass fed beef, salmon, and other whole, unprocessed foods. Studies are showing now that even saturated fat, when unprocessed, can sometimes be a good thing because these fats are often medium chain fatty acids, which can be digested and converted into energy quickly. In other words, when you eat them, your body doesn’t store the fat.

There is also a big difference between a weight loss shake you make with real whole food ingredients and the ones that are made by mixing a little powder with some milk or something like that.

Powders have mostly artificial or processed ingredients. This can make it tricky for your body to digest these things. Milk is also a common weight gain trigger for many people, as it is often difficult to digest for most people as well. (While skim milk may be fat free, it’s not necessarily good for you, nor can it make you lose weight any faster than you would by drinking whole milk). Most people can lose weight faster by eating “high fat” coconut milk than cow’s milk, since digestion is often hampered with cow’s milk due to protein sensitivity or lactose intolerance.

When you want to lose weight with smoothies, you’re going to want to eat a smoothie for breakfast, maybe one for lunch – and you’ll likely be satisfied – and even if you are still hungry eating something else that is healthy such as some walnuts or almonds or veggies isn’t going to make a significant difference.

If you’re worried about fruit smoothies being fattening, the most important thing to do is to make sure you put vegetables in with the fruits. If you eat a healthy diet balanced with both fruits and vegetables, it’s pretty impossible not to lose weight. Where people often get into trouble is eating too many grains, especially if they may have undiagnosed Celiac Disease. Many people who give up wheat completely often see significant and dramatic results.

One of the problems many people fall into is when they look at weight loss smoothies as meal replacement shakes, and they expect one lousy cup of protein powder and some milk (which usually has 300 calories or more) to be enough. Unfortunately, most people are still hungry after a shake like that and so then eat something else which can push them in the higher calorie bracket.

Another interesting thing is that the body digests sugars from fruits differently than it would pure sugar on its own. Because fruit is also typically loaded with fiber, it doesn’t cause the stress on your body that pure sugar does, and it is not quickly released to be burnt off as energy to begin the never ending cycle of sugar cravings.

The bottom line? Fruit smoothies are not fattening when you know the right way to enjoy them. You should enjoy a wide variety of different types that are made with all natural ingredients, do not have things such as ice cream or yogurt added to them (unless coconut), add veggies into them, and do not add sugar. You’ll melt those pounds off in weeks, and feel the best you’ve felt in a very long time!

Raw Food Protein Smoothies Recipes

More and more people are joining the raw foods movement, and so for that reason we’ve decided to share with you some of our best raw food protein smoothies recipes and shakes.

Eating raw foods has many health benefits, mainly because when foods are not cooked, they do not lose the important enzymes that aid in digestion and vitamin absorption. They also retain all of their antioxidants. Since many people following a raw foods diet do not like to consume raw meat or eggs, getting protein can be a bit of a challenge. While you can always put an egg in a smoothie (and most ice creams actually do contain raw eggs!), there are many other different potential sources of protein, such as whey protein, hemp protein, soy protein, and wheat protein.

Many people on a raw diet often struggle with finding a decent protein powder, especially since most are full of chemicals, preservatives, additives, and processed milk proteins. Soy is not a good alternative, especially when so many studies show that soy may actually be quite bad for you. If you’re looking for a powder that is all natural, your two best options are one of the many Sun Warrier Brown Rice Proteins, which are live, fermented, and not too bad as far as taste goes, or if you haven’t already explored hemp to try a Hemp Protein Powder which also can give you additional protein in your diet.

On a raw foods diet, one of the best sources of protein is often raw, unpasteurized and unprocessed milk. While it may be difficult to find, depending on where you live and are located, it can be quite good for you.

Since cooking is limited on a raw foods diet, your blender can be an indispensable kitchen gadget. We had some success using a Ninja Master Prep blender, but if you can afford it, the Vitamix still remains our top choice. However, even inexpensive blenders can still do the job – so no worries if you’re using one you picked up at a garage sale!

Strawberry Banana Smoothie Recipes

Strawberries and bananas go together so well, that this site couldn’t call itself a weight loss smoothie blog without a few strawberry banana smoothie recipes!

Whenever you make  smoothies, you have to make sure that you have the right ingredients on hand. Fresh ingredients will always give you the best flavor, though when strawberries are out of season, using frozen is okay. A lot of people believe in order to make a good smoothie you need to use yogurt, but that of course is not true! (See our yogurt free strawberry smoothie recipes.)

Strawberries are very healthy for you, and they are packed with potassium, fiber and folate and antioxidants. They are also a good source of Vitamin A. Bananas are also a nice potassium kick, and so this is a good drink that will give you plenty of energy for the whole day.

Depending on the size of them and what type of blender you have, you may want to make sure you slice them into pieces first. The leaves are healthy, so you can go ahead and leave them on!

Here’s our favorite recipe:

1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries
1 banana
1 cup sweetened coconut milk
1 cup ice

Directions: Mix all of the ingredients in a blender until smooth. If the shake is too thick, add more coconut milk as needed.

No fresh fruit? You can use frozen strawberries instead:

Frozen Smoothie

You Will need:
1 banana
1 1/2 cups frozen strawberries
1 cup coconut milk

Directions: Mix all of the ingredients together until blended smooth.

If you want to make your healthy strawberry banana smoothie even more healthy, try adding a half cup of either fresh baby spinach or Romaine lettuce greens. You’ll barely taste them or know they are there, but both will give you even more nutrients!

Something else that you can do is add more of your other favorite berries. We find that blueberries go great with strawberries, so a strawberry blueberry banana smoothie recipe is in order!

The Wild Berry Banana Smoothie:

You Will Need:
1 Banana
1/2 cup blueberries
1 cup strawberries
1 cup vanilla coconut milk (or other milk alternative, such as almond milk, also quite tasty!)

Directions: Blend all of the ingredients together on high until smoothie is blended and smooth. (That’s how smoothies get their name you know!)

Well, we really hope you like our strawberry banana smoothie recipes here. You can make a great tasting – and healthy – milkshake any time of the year to enjoy!

How to Make Strawberry Smoothies Without Yogurt

One of the classics and favorite shakes is a delicious strawberry smoothie. Most recipes call for yogurt or ice cream however and so if you want to learn how to make strawberry smoothies without yogurt because you don’t have it on hand or maybe you are lactose intolerant or vegan it can be tricky!

Fortunately, here at Shake Weight Loss we are shake and smoothie pros and so of course we have some really easy and simple recipes you can make which are milk and yogurt free.

The key to making any type of smoothie or yogurt is having the right kitchen equipment. You don’t need anything elaborate or fancy or even expensive – you just need something that works and is comfortable for you to use. The right mixing equipment makes it much easier to do what you want to do without having to worry about which ingredients you want to use.

Most recipes need to have something that is liquid in it in order to blend – if you were to put just some strawberries and ice into a blender you would likely be very disappointed because the ice would not become crushed and the strawberries would just kind of spin around. This is why so many recipes require milk or yogurt because that type of liquid is necessary in order for it to mix well. But, don’t worry – there are plenty of great substitutions to make.

What can you use as a substitute for yogurt? Here are just a few ideas:

Orange Juice
Pineapple Juice
Coconut Milk
Water
Mashed Banana

And now for a really easy and simple strawberry Smoothie Recipe

1 cup ice cubes
6-7 whole strawberries
1/2 cup orange juice
1/4 cup water

Rinse the strawberries and cut the tops off and slice each strawberry in half. Mix all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Makes 1 serving. Remember you can experiment with different flavors by simply using a different juice in place of the orange juice/water. For example, you could use strawberry juice, grape juice, peach juice, soy milk, coconut milk, skim milk, and many others.

To make your strawberry smoothie even more nutritious, you may also want to consider adding in some spinach or other greens. (Adding in a banana will completely mask the greens!)

This is a great treat to have as an afternoon snack or enjoy as dessert after dinner! Hope you enjoy!

Diet Smoothie Recipes

Making a diet smoothie is a great and refreshing way to get the fruits and vegetables we need to eat. 1 cup of veggies might seem like a lot to eat – but when you blend it with your other fruits and veggies it can be a delicious treat. These weight loss smoothies are also very satisfying and filling – which makes them perfect for an afternoon snack or some might even like them after their dinner.

Remember though, When you trying to lose weight, it’s important to know how to use smoothies and weight loss shakes properly. If you are not careful it can result in a lot of extra calories and sugar – which could also possibly mean you could be gaining weight instead of losing weight.

Here are some of our diet smoothie recipes that we enjoy below:

Cranberry Peach Splash Smoothie
This recipe uses cranberry juice, which promote excellent kidney and urinary tract health. Peaches contain lycopene and lutein, two nutrients that are believed to help in the prevention of heart disease and cancer.

You will need these ingredients:
1 cup white cranberry juice
1 peach, pitted and cut into slices {you can also peel, if desired)

Health Kick Orange
Oranges and pineapple are both excellent sources of vitamin C, making this smoothie a great one to drink if you may be prone to getting sick. Pineapple also contains manganese, which is believed to help strengthen bones. The kiwi fruit is also very helpful, as it also contains not only vitamin C but also potassium which gives you energy and beta-carotene.

You will need these ingredients:
1 cup orange juice (we prefer freshly squeezed, but from concentrate with no sugar added is okay too)
1 cup pineapple chunks
1 Kiwi, sliced and peeled
1 cup ice

Directions: Blend all ingredients in a blender until blended together.

Chocolate Banana Smoothie
Don’t let the name fool you – just because this smoothie has a hint of chocolate that doesn’t mean it isn’t healthy for you. The milk provides vitamin D and protein, and the banana is loaded with potassium.

You Will Need the following ingredients:
1 cup coconut milk
2 teaspoons of cocoa powder
1 teaspoon honey
1 banana
1 cup ice

Directions: Combine milk, cocoa powder, and honey together until powder is disolved and honey is mixed in. (The honey may not mix completely – so don’t be worried if the chocolate is mixed in but not the honey yet.) Combine cocoa milk with banana and ice in blender – blend until ice is crushed and has a smooth texture.

Blue Raspberry Peach Smoothie
We bring peaches back in this simple to make diet smoothie recipe. In addition to the health benefits of the peaches, the blueberries are high in antioxidants that are believed to help slow down aging. Raspberries contribute a nice dose of maganese as well as the ever so important omega 3 fatty acids that do your body good. Who knew that such a delicious treat could be so good for you too?

1/2 cup raspberries

Yogurt Smoothies & Shakes Recipes

Drinking yogurt smoothies is a great way to lose weight and get important nutrients your body needs as well. The yogurt smoothie recipes we show below are easy to make and will help you get much of the nutrition you need in one simple drink.

There are many health benefits of eating yogurt. A cultured milk product, this is a food that has been known to be in existence for over 4500 years. Most varieties you see contain live active bacteria. While we think bacteria might be a bad thing, there are actually good bacteria that can help us fight off and resist infection and improve digestion. When looking at the massive selection of different cultured milk products in your grocery store’s refrigeration section, you’ll want to always make sure that the products you choose clearly state on the labels that it contains live cultures to see these types of benefits.  If you don’t drink milk or dairy products, don’t fret – thanks to a company called So Delicious you can now make these same smoothies using coconut milk yogurt, found in most health food grocery stores.

Remember if using dairy based yogurt to go for the organic, full fat, “raw” milk yogurt – the hormones, antibiotics, and processing makes milk very difficult to digest for some people. While people think “low fat” milk will help them lose weight, that is not actually the case!

Basic Yogurt Smoothie Recipe for 2-4 Servings:

2 Cups of Yogurt
1 cup frozen fruit
1 cup juice

You will then want to blend all of these items together in your blender until smooth and creamy. For thicker shakes, substitute 1/2 banana for 1/2 cup juice.

Once you know this simple formula, the possibilities are endless for creating your own unique recipes and shakes depending on your individual tastes and preferences.

Here are a few sample ideas you can try:

Flavored Yogurts: Strawberry, Lemon, Orange, Peach, Blueberry, Vanilla, Cherry, Raspberry, Blackberry, Mango, Pina Colada, Pineapple

Frozen Fruits: Melons, Grapes, Bananas, Watermelon, Canteloupe, Strawberries, Raspberries, Blueberries, Pineapple, Pears, Kiwi

Juices: Grape Juice, Cranberry Juice, Apple Juice, Orange Juice, Lemon/Lime Juice, Pineapple

Depending on what tastes you are looking for, all you need to do is combine of of each from the above list. For example, to make a strawberry yogurt smoothie I might use plain yogurt and then mix it with orange juice and frozen strawberries. For a more tropical drink, I might consider using Mango flavored yogurt and mix it with orange and pineapple juice as well as frozen watermelon to make yogurt shakes.

Another thing you can try is to take your favorite regular milkshake recipe that calls for ice cream and instead of using ice cream substitute the frozen yogurt instead. This will give it a different texture than using non frozen varieties instead.

You really can’t go wrong with a frozen yogurt smoothie. They’re easy to make, fun to experiment with, and so very good for you too as a source of a weight loss shake!

Frozen Fruit Smoothies Recipes

Making Frozen Fruit Smoothies is an excellent way to get important vitamins and minerals in your diet. They can also help provide many antioxidants which help you fight disease and stay healthy. They can be an excellent snack as they are surprisingly filling or they can be a nice accompaniment to a light lunch or healthy breakfast. Using frozen fruit is especially nice in the winter months, since it is usually less expensive than fresh when not in season.

One of the worst mistakes when it comes to drinking smoothies is to not think about sugar content. Fruit naturally contains sugar – so you don’t want to ever add sugar or other sweets with it, since that will likely cause changes in your blood sugar levels. The sugar in fruits is usually absorbed more slowly, but sweeteners may leave you with a sugar crash and feeling tired or moody later.

You can find almost any frozen fruit available in your grocer’s freezer. Most commonly they usually all have blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries. Many also have frozen peaches or frozen melons which are more difficult to come by, but a nice unique treat. If you cannot find these foods already pre-frozen, you can always buy them fresh and then freeze them for later use. It is not a requirement that you use frozen foods – it will just ensure that the drink is cold when you serve it and will give it that “smoothie texture” that so many people love about these types of beverages in the first place! If using fresh ingredients, you may simply need to adjust the recipe by adding more ice.

A good blender is essential – if you do not want to spend all night cleaning parts and pieces or trying to find the right settings make sure the kind you are using is one that you are comfortable with. Many people prefer hand blenders or single serving styles over the standard run of your mill blender.

When you are creating your own frozen fruit smoothie recipe, you will want to make sure that you always include some sort of liquid, such as juice, in with the mixture. This is because as I learned the hard way one night the blender will not work without some sort of liquid inside of it.

Here are some of our favorite frozen fruit smoothie recipes:

1 cup frozen strawberries
1 mango
1 banana

Water Melon Smoothie

You Will Need:
1 cup frozen watermelon
1/2 cup frozen strawberries
1 cup grape or orange juice

Hopefully you will enjoy some of these frozen fruit smoothie recipes and use them as inspiration for making your own tasty creations. Learning how to make them yourself can ensure that you only put in the healthiest ingredients that will keep you on track with your diet plan.
